Republican gubernatorial candidates oppose health bill

Laramie, WY – The Republican candidates for Governor all say they are strongly opposed to the federal health care bill. The four agree that if elected, they will ask the attorney general to look into ways of keeping Wyoming from being negatively impacted by mandates in the bill. That might include joining other states in a lawsuit. Colin Simpson says mandates in the measure could be devastating: "There's some drastic impacts to small businesses and employers of all sizes. And I don't see how that is going to do any good for Wyoming."

Health Care Lobbyists on Capitol Hill Outnumber Lawmakers

Wyoming – Lobbyists are working overtime in Washington as health care reform weaves its way through Congress. But Wyoming's congressional delegation says that they are not in contact with them. Matt Laslo reports from Capitol Hill.

Reaction to Sage Grouse Decision

Wyoming – Wyoming government is not resting easy after the sage grouse listing decision earlier this month. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife service ruled that the bird warranted protection under the endangered species act... but that the agency had to devote its resources to species in greater danger. Audubon Wyoming's Brian Rutledge is on Governor Freudenthal's Sage Grouse Implementation Team, which is working to protect the bird. He told Addie Goss that the team is trying to figure out where to go from here

Drop in Elk Numbers Cause a Stir

Wyoming – Elk numbers are down in the Jackson area and some locals argue that wolves are to blame. On Saturday, Jackson outfitters will hold an anti-wolf rally in Jackson's town square, arguing that wolves are impacting the species they depend on to make a living. Mark Gocke is the spokesperson for Wyoming Game and Fish in the Jackson and Pinedale regions. Wyoming Public Radio's Addie Goss asked Gocke what's been happening to the area's elk.

The History of the Firearms Freedom Act

Wyoming – As of this month, five states have passed a measure that uses gun rights as a way of repudiating federal authority. It's called the Firearms Freedom Act, and it says that firearms made, bought and held within a particular state are not subject to federal regulation. Governor Dave Freudenthal signed Wyoming's version of the bill this month. Wyoming Public Radio's Molly Messick has this story on the origins and the aims of a growing movement.

EPA plans to increase standard for TCE

Cheyenne, WY – Plans by the Environmental Protection Agency to set a tougher standard for the amount of a toxic chemical allowed in drinking water will raise the bar for cleaning up contaminated groundwater near old nuclear missile sites.

But a tougher standard for trichloroethylene will add little if any expense to cleaning up those sites.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says that once groundwater is cleaned up to the current standard, not much more work is needed to reduce TCE to undetectable levels.
