Montana and Wyoming Debate Water in Bighorn Lake

Laramie, Wy – During a meeting on a water dispute between Wyoming and Montana participants found some agreement. That was on the need to build tourism in the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area. It straddles the two states.
But disagreement continues on how to solve the larger problem of how much water should be stored in Bighorn Lake.

Deal in Works for Logging Money

Laramie, Wy – Payments to rural counties hurt by cutbacks in logging would continue for one year under a deal reached in Washington, D-C.
The measure calls for spending 400 million dollars to help 700 counties hurt by logging cutbacks.
Wyoming counties would get about two-point-four million dollars under the proposal.
Oregon Congressman Greg Walden says he and other lawmakers secured the one-year extension, as part of an emergency spending bill for the Iraq war.
But President Bush is threatening to veto it.

State Department Will Watch Grade Inflation In Connection With Hathaway

Cheyenne, Wy – With the new Hathaway scholarship curriculum now in place the state department of education is watching another issue, grade inflation. State Superintendent Jim McBride calls it a real issue as school districts will have pressure to give students the highest grades possible so that they can acquire more Hathaway scholarship money. McBride says some districts that had rigorous standards for acquiring an A have made 90 percent an A.

Landowners Lose Case To D-M & E

Gillette, Wy – A judge in Gillette has ordered two
landowners to allow their property to be surveyed by the Dakota,
Minnesota and Eastern Railroad for a planned rail line.
The railroad sued Lenard Seeley and Jerry Dilts for permission
to survey land they own in Campbell, Converse and Weston counties.
The surveys are in preparation for a six (b) billion-dollar rail
line for exporting coal from the Powder River Basin.
The surveys could be a step toward the railroad using eminent
domain to obtain the land.

Jackson Hole Skier Survives Avalanche

Jackson, WY – A skier was rescued after being caught in
an avalanche south of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. The Bridger-Teton National Forest Avalanche Center says the avalanche happened yesterday (Sunday). Forest officials say the skier was swept through trees, over a cliff and was almost completely buried Some of the skier's companions found him quickly and dug him out. Forest officials say they don't know how severely injured the skier was. An avalanche killed a 25-year-old skier south of the resort on January 5.

Bob Peck Dies In Cheyenne

Cheyenne, Wy – State senator and long-time newspaper
publisher Bob Peck died today (Tuesday). He was 82 years old. Peck died at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center.
Peck missed most of the just completed legislative session after
being diagnosed with a blood clot and pneumonia in January. Peck
was diagnosed with West Nile virus in August. He was in critical
condition for two days but improved after that.
Peck was born in Riverton and lived most of his life there.
He began his newspaper career writing for the Riverton high
