Senator Peck Remains in Hospital

Cheyenne, WY – State Senator Bob Peck is recovering. The 82-year-old from Riverton caught West Nile Virus this summer then contracted pneumonia at the beginning of January. He is now in a Cheyenne hospital and Senate President John Schiffer says he visits him regularly and he is improving. Schiffer says he doesn't know when Peck will return to the Senate. Today the Senate temporarily replaced Peck on two committees. Schiffer says that is to keep the processing moving while Peck recovers.

Eminent Domain Bill Goes to Senate

Cheyenne, WY – The bill to change the state's eminent domain law passed the House today. It seemed like a controversial proposal originally but it made it through the House fairly easily. The final vote was 56 to four. Speaker Pro Tem, Tom Lubnau complimented his colleagues for dealing with the difficult topic and with the two competing interests, agriculture and industry. Lubnau says that both interests distorted and misrepresented the facts and that the House did a good job at sortiing them out. This bill now heads to the Senate.

UW Tuition Goes Up For Some

Laramie, WY – University of Wyoming trustees decided today to put off voting on a tuition increase for undergrads who are from Wyoming. Those students will not see a tuition increase for the 2007-08 academic year. But the trustees approved a 6 percent increase for all students from out of state. Tuition will also increase by about 3 percent for in-state graduate students, law students and pharmacy students.

Skier Dies at Grand Targhee

Laramie, WY – A skier died this week at a Jackson Hole area resort after apparently colliding with a tree. The Teton County Sheriff's Office says a 20-year-old man died Thursday at Grand Targhee Resort in Alta. The victim's name was not immediately released. He was skiing with friends and family but was the last person to descend the hill and no one witnessed the crash. The man was wearing a helmet but appeared to have suffered severe trauma to his torso.
