Wind task force favors eminent domain limits

Casper, Wyo. – A task force is recommending that Wyoming no longer allow private companies to seize land for small power lines for wind projects.

The Wind Energy Task Force voted 5-4 Thursday in Casper to deny the power of eminent domain to private companies that want to string power lines from wind turbines to main transmission lines.

At the same time, the panel recommends that regulated public utilities retain the power of eminent domain.

BLM warns hunters about fire south of Rawlins

Rawlins, Wyo. – The U.S. Bureau of Land Management is warning hunters about a wildfire on state land outside Rawlins.

The fire started around 12:30 p.m. Thursday and grew to 250 acres. The fire is northwest of McCarty Canyon Road south of Rawlins.

Nearly a dozen parachuting firefighters are on the scene and heavy tanker planes that can drop fire retardant are on the way.

The BLM is asking people to contact anyone they know who's in that area and let them know about the fire. The cause of the fire is being investigated.

Expert Says Advertising Is Bad For Children

LARAMIE, wyo – The director of a group called the Campaign for a Commercial Free Childhood says keeping children away from advertising is a growing challenge. Susan Linn is in Laramie as part of the U-W Consumer Issues Conference. Her group recently filed a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission regarding a cartoon series that features characters advertising a brand of shoes throughout the program. Linn is urging people to get involved in the complaint to try to stop this illegal practice.

Yellowstone's Antelope Fire has expanded

LARAMIE, wyo – After growing by about 13 hundred acres on Tuesday, Yellowstone's Antelope Fire is continuing to expand. Fire Information Officer Marianne Baumberger says the fire has jumped the Yellowstone River, and it's sending up a big column of smoke.

"It spotted over across the Yellowstone and into an area of some heavy timber that's kind of sandwiched between the 2002 Broad Fire and some 1988 burn."

Upcoming conference to discuss Latina issues

CHEYENNE, wyo – An upcoming conference in Cheyenne will discuss the educational and social issues facing Latina girls in Wyoming.

The Wyoming Latina Youth Conference is scheduled for Oct. 15-through-the-17 and is hosted by Laramie County Community College. Girls statewide in grades 5-through-12 are invited to attend.

There will be discussions and workshops on education, teen pregnancy, healthy relationships, substance abuse and even dancing.

Green River to bid on BLM land purchase

GREEN RIVER, Wyo – The Green River City Council has voted to make a bid to buy nearly 1,200 acres of Bureau of Land Management land near the town.

Mayor Hank Castillon said he hopes Green River will be able to buy the land but it may not happen for a few years.

Castillon said that if the city buys the land it could sell parcels for development.

Judge dismisses states' gun suit

HELENA, mont – A federal judge in Missoula is dismissing a lawsuit launched by gun rights advocates and states, including Wyoming, seeking freedom from federal gun laws.

The decision, from U.S. District Judge Donald Molloy, was expected since his magistrate - a month ago - recommended tossing out the lawsuit.

The decision sides with the U.S. Department of Justice - which says Congress can set standards on such items as guns through its power to regulate interstate commerce.
