Unemployment inched upward in August

Laramie, Wyo. – The state's unemployment rate ticked up slightly from July to August, to 6.8 percent. It's the first increase in unemployment that the state has seen since early this year, but Wyoming Department of Employment Economist David Bullard says the increase is not statistically significant.

"Our unemployment rate was 7.6 percent in January. And then it decreased every month through July, down to 6.7 percent in July. And now we've gone up just one tenth."

Barrasso seeks Senate GOP position

CHEYENNE, wyo. – U.S. Senator John Barrasso says he will run for vice chairman of the Senate Republican Conference.
The Wyoming Republican says if he's chosen, he will use the position to stand up for Wyoming and western issues.
The position is the fifth-ranking leadership position in the Republican Party conference in the U.S. Senate.

Fires continue

Evanston, Wyo – Three significant wildfires are burning in Wyoming, including a lightning-caused
wildfire in Yellowstone National Park. The second fire is outside Laramie and a third is east of Evanston.The Yellowstone fire, which was reported Sept. 14, was 5 percent contained Monday, growing to 1,600 acres, or nearly 2 1/2 square

Rogers Canyon Fire Still Burns

LARAMIE, wy – Rogers Canyon Road is closed until further notice due to safety concerns caused by the nearby Dry Gulch Fire outside Laramie.

The 1,200 acre blaze started in the early morning hours on Sunday, and is burning mainly grass, sage, and pine trees 7 miles northeast of Laramie.

The start of the blaze is under investigation. No structures have been destroyed, but one home and an outbuilding are threatened.

More than 100 firefighters and air crews have been battling the blaze which is now 25% contained. Full containment of the fire is estimated by Wednesday.
