Rock Springs may ban cell phones

Rock Springs, Wy – The Rock Springs City Council is moving ahead with a proposed ordinance to ban the use of cell phones while driving. The ordinance cleared initial approval Tuesday. Two more readings are needed to enact the ordinance.
The ordinance would apply when drivers use cell phones for
talking, text massaging or taking photos.
Exceptions include police and ambulance drivers in the line of
duty - or when people use a device allowing them to talk while
keeping both hands on the wheel.

Man sentenced for beating stepson

Casper, Wy – A judge has sentenced a Thayne man to serve up to 18 years in prison in the beating death two years ago of his stepson.
The Casper Star-Tribune reports that District Court Judge
Jeffrey A. Donnell sentenced Cody Roberts on Wednesday.
Authorities say Roberts told investigators that he
unintentionally killed his 6-year-old stepson Ethan Jonathan
Alberts in August 2007 by punching the boy.
Roberts entered an "Alford plea" to charges of aggravated
assault and manslaughter earlier this year. The plea means that he

Cheyenne project is dead

Cheyenne, Wy – Plans to rejuvenate a block in downtown Cheyenne by renovating a long-vacant building and constructing a skywalk and hotel are dead.
The Marriott extended stay hotel would have been built on a lot
where a building burned down in an arson attack more than four

Fremont County picks new County Attorney

Lander, Wy – The Fremont County Commission has selected acting County Attorney Brian Varn to replace Ed Newell, who resigned as county attorney.
Newell last month became embroiled in a scandal in which he
acknowledged receiving e-mails containing images of nude women. An
investigation showed some of the photos were taken in county
buildings and city of Riverton buildings. Newell resigned effective
April 15.
Varn has been a deputy county attorney. Commi 1/4ssioners named him
county attorney on Tuesday.

Teton County tol hold climate change discussion

Jackson, Wy – On Wednesday, Teton County will be the site of one of ten national conversations on how to address climate change. A National program will host the discussion that will help communities find local solutions. Sarah Mitchell of the Jackson Hole organization Pursue Balance says they will take ideas and try and develop a plan. The conversation will take place from noon till 4:30 at the Teton County Fair Building.

Wolves kill livestock near Casper


Casper, Wy – The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plans to kill two wolves that are believed to have killed a yearling calf in the Laramie Mountains southeast of Casper.
Mike Jimenez, the service's wolf coordinator for Wyoming, says a
rancher in the area of the Deer Creek drainage reported the
depredation last week.
Wildlife Services agents conducted a necropsy and confirmed the
calf was killed by wolves.
Jimenez says it's common for wolves to disperse around the state
during the winter, but this is the farthest east that wolves have
