Laramie, WY – A new study shows that just 30-percent of Wyoming students participate in summer school programs and most of those are involved in remedial work. Linda Barton is the Executive Director of the Wyoming Afterschool Alliance. She says summer school is an important tool to help all students succeed in the classroom...but not all districts can afford to pay for summer enrichment programs
"Comes down to funding availability for most communities to be able to access enough funds to pay for a high quality summer program. The reason for that is that it takes quality staff to operate programs."
Barton says finding ways to fund such programs is critical. She says low income children who don't have a chance to supplement their learning through summer travel are impacted the most by a lack of options for summer school.
