Bill to Ban Open Containers Up for Debate Again

Cheyenne, WY – Drinking on Wyoming highways is once again a target. The Senate judiciary committee is recommending that a bill that would ban open containers in moving vehicles be approved. The only exception will be charter vehicles. Currently passengers can consume alcohol on Wyoming highways. Last year Senators tried to allow alcohol in Recreation Vehicles, but house members disagreed and the bill failed. This year Senator Tony Ross says alcohol can be in a moving vehicle as long as it is locked and away from the driver and passengers. State Substance Abuse Division Chief Steve Gilmore says taking alcohol out of the hands of passengers is key. Colonel Sam Powell of the Wyoming Highway Patrol says it will also balance state law with municipal laws. The measure now heads to the senate floor.
