Bison Hunt Will Go On

Laramie, WY – A bison hunt in the National Elk Refuge this weekend could bring an end to almost 10 years of legal conflict. The Refuge and the state of Wyoming tried to allow bison hunting in 1998, but were stopped by a lawsuit from an animal advocacy group. That suit was dismissed last month - giving hunters a green light. Refuge manager Steve Kallin says the hunts are necessary because the bison's ever-increasing population is cutting into the elk's food supply.

Kallin says he hopes hunters will kill about 300 adult bison this year. Hunters applied for licenses this past winter and were selected randomly. The Refuge will host an open house Thursday night in Jackson.
