Laramie, WY – The Bureau of Land Management has published a draft set of land restoration rules. The new set of criteria would tell energy companies how to restore land they've disturbed during projects. Jonah BLM office spokesman Mike Stiewig says that because more intense drilling has been allowed on the Jonah field near Pinedale more intense standards for restoring the land are needed. Stiewig says the criteria for cleaning up disturbed land in the Jonah field are much more stringent than previous rules.
He says the BLM will not take responsibility for monitoring and enforcing reclamation. But he says companies must report progress quarterly and that the BLM will try to check those reports on the ground. The draft rules are open for public comment this month.
