Laramie, WY – The Campbell County Sheriff's Office budget is higher than all other sheriff's departments in Wyoming for the sixth straight year.
Campbell County has a larger budget than counties with higher crime rates and bigger populations. The Wyoming Department of Audit released the financial data late last month.
Campbell County Sheriff Bill Pownall says the spending is justified because most of it goes to salaries and benefits. He also says the yearly figures are misleading. He says his department's budget includes the cost of dispatch services while other counties have combined centers where dispatch expenses are split.
Campbell County's Sheriff's budget was $6.8 million for 2009-2010. The second highest was Sweetwater County with $6.1 million.
