Canada Struggles with Mad Cow Cases
Laramie, Wy – Canadian officials say a dairy cow that was diagnosed with mad cow disease probably contracted it from contaminated feed.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency statement follows an investigation that was launched because the animal was exposed to the ailment after a 1997 feed ban was imposed. The infected animal did not die of the disease, and no part of its carcass entered the human or animal food chain.
Today's announcement comes a day after Canada confirmed its eighth case of mad cow disease -- this one in an Alberta beef cow believed to be between eight and ten years old.
