Laramie, Wyo. – It's been one year since law enforcement agencies in Wyoming have been able to bust drivers for having an open container of alcohol in their vehicles.
From July 2007 through March 2008, the Wyoming Highway Patrol has issued about 340 citations for open containers.
Sgt. Stephen Townsend says most of those tickets were issued after motorists were stopped for something else.
"We stop them for, say, speeding, and when a trooper comes up to the car he sees either the driver or passenger with an open container and he cites them from there," Townsend says.
The measure faced opposition for years at the capitol before lawmakers approved it in 2007.
Townsend says some people still claim ignorance of the law, but he says word is starting to spread that it is illegal for anyone to have open containers in a vehicle.
