Laramie, Wyo. – A Republican candidate for State Auditor says that she would support using state economic development money to help fund daycare centers. The issue has become one of controversy after local daycare operators complained to the State Lands and Investment Board that the state was competing with them by building new daycare facilities.
But Cynthia Cloud says the additional facilities are needed, and building them certainly qualifies as economic development. She is especially interested in a model at Sheridan College. "They're educating the workforce, therefore it's raising the wage rate of that business sector and providing better quality day care," she said. "I think that supports the women and they are able to go work knowing that their children are taken care of. It provides jobs and better quality care."
Cloud says daycare facilities make it easier for employers in the state to recruit workers.
