Community colleges not in Freudenthal budget
By Peter O'Dowd
Laramie, WY – Community college leaders are turning to state lawmakers after the governor did not recommend funding campus construction projects. Wyoming law does not require the state to provide money for building residence halls or similar projects, even though education officials say they are badly needed.
Western Community College President Tex Boggs says he was disappointed that Governor Dave Freudenthal's plan provided no money for a residence hall in Rock Springs. Boggs says the college is losing up to 100 students a year because they have no place to live.
Boggs says alternatives to state funding include selling property or seeking bond approval from Sweetwater County. Past budgets have included construction projects on college campuses.
