laramie, wy – A Wyoming conservation group is calling for an end to clearcut logging in National Forests. The Biodiversity Conservation Alliance is starting out by targeting the Medicine Bow Forest. U-W professor, Dennis Knight, has researched ecology and forest management for 35 years in the Medicine Bow. He says clearcutting is something he would prefer not to see. But, he acknowledges it has a role.Knight and other researchers say forests like the Medicine Bow used to experience catastrophic fires. But, now people put those fires out and so a clearcut can replicate the impact of a fire. So, they say a ban on clearcuts would not be the best for the ecology of forests.
