Conservation Groups Try To Protect The Wolverine
By Peter O'Dowd
Laramie, Wy – Conservation groups say the wolverine is at risk of going extinct, and they are threatening to sue the Fish and Wildlife Service to protect the animal.
The Fish and Wildlife Service acknowledged in March that the wolverine was threatened. Studies suggest that only 39 of the reclusive mountain animals are actively breeding in the lower 48 states. But the federal government will not protect the wolverine because the population is thriving in Canada. David Gaillard of the Defenders of Wildlife says that policy puts the animal at risk of extinction.
So, 10 conservation groups have asked the Fish and Wildlife Service to reconsider the decision not to protect the animal. If it doesn't, Gaillard says the groups will sue, claiming the agency has violated the Endangered Species Act.
