Cowboys move on with new Defensive Coordinator
University of Wyoming Defensive-Line coach, Jamar Cain, has been promoted to Defensive Coordinator after this week’s firing of former coordinator, Chris Tormey.
The Pokes defense has been underwhelming this year. Ranked number 105 in total defense out of 123 teams in the NCAA, UW has given up over 50 points a game during the last two weeks.
Head Coach Dave Christensen says that firing Tormey was hard, but gives his team the best chance to win going forward.
“It’s never easy. I’ve been in a relationship with Chris; he was a coach of mine when I was a player in 1980, so I do have a lot of respect for him,” said Christensen “,but at the point in time, I just felt it was the best thing for the football team to make a change, so we’re moving forward.”
Christensen says that execution has been the biggest issue for the Pokes’ defense so far and that he likes the energy that Cain brings to his work.
With the Cowboys’ high powered offense, Cain says that the defense will need to slow opponents down in order to win ball games.
“With our offense, you know, ranked top ten in the nation in total offense, we just gotta do our job,” said Cain, “just do our job up front, keep the ball in front of us, don’t give up the big play and everything should fall in place.”
Cain says he looks forward to seeing how the defensive unit performs in the final four games of the regular season.
The Cowboys have two weeks to prepare for nationally ranked Fresno State.
