Laramie, WY – A former University of Wyoming swimmer will not return to the Olympics this year.
Scott Usher came in third in the finals of the 200-meter breaststroke at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials yesterday.
He needed a second place to go to Beijing.
Usher went to the Olympics in 2004 and placed seventh in the same event.
U.W. swim coach Tom Johnson was there to watch Usher. He says the race was disappointing.
"He was everywhere he wanted to be, he just didn't have that last gear to dig down and finish the race the way he did in '04. And if he had, he'd be an Olympian right now," Johnson said.
Johnson says Usher has done a lot to raise the profile of U.W. swimming during his sparkling career, and he can't thank him enough.
