Hearing on Fremont County Commissioner districts will take place today.

Cheyenne, Wy – This afternoon, a federal judge will hear arguments about what sort of new voting system Fremont County should adopt. U.S. District Judge Alan B. Johnson ruled this spring that Fremont County's system of at-large voting for county commissioners violated federal law by
diluting the voting rights of American Indians. The county includes
most of the Wind River Indian Reservation. In response to the decision, Fremont
county asked Johnson to approve designating a single County Commission district in which American Indians would be the majority. It wants to continue with at-large elections elsewhere.
The plaintiffs who are tribal members, want single-member districts for each of the county commission
candidates.
