Jackson, Wy – The Jackson City Council has given
preliminary approval to a change to the town's land development
regulations to allow residential uses on the second or third floors
of buildings in commercial districts.
City staff will now draft the amendment into an ordinance. The
council would have to approve it three times before it becomes law.
Supporters of the measure said it will encourage housing
development in the pricey Jackson market.
Under Jackson's current regulations, the only residential uses
allowed in commercial zones are for employee housing, or if an
owner wants to live above a business.
Councilor Melissa Turley spoke in favor of the move. She says
she's seen a revitalization of her home town of Denver when they
started allowing residential uses downtown.
