Wyoming continues to add new jobs. But that is hurting some. State officials say almost seven thousand new jobs have been added with a third of those in the mining sector. State Department of Employment officials believe the numbers show them that the employment base is getting more diverse. State Workforce Information Supervisor Mark Harris says while some jobs have been added, some of the lower paying, hourly wage jobs are having problems finding workers. "That has been on the radar screen for a little while." For instance, Harris says the Wyoming Lodging and Restaurant Association has a program to try and train high school workers to learn culinary arts and other skills, to find a young workforce.Harris says what typically happens is that the lower paying jobs will raise their wages in order to attract workers. However, some businesses say that could threaten their bottom line.
