Cheyenne, Wy – The House Travel Committee has recommended
a measure allowing Wyoming to join the multistate Powerball lottery.
The vote was eight-to-one to send the measure to the House for further debate.
Proponents say that if people don't want to play the lottery, they don't have to. They likened it to a voluntary tax.
Republican Representative Kathy Davison, of Kemmerer, was the lone dissenter. She says she's not convinced the majority of state residents want the lottery.
The sponsor, G-O-P Representative Dave Edwards of Douglas, estimates the state would net about ten-million dollars per year from lottery sales.
Under the bill, proceeds would be split among senior citizen services, state parks and the General Fund.
