Mixed Results In Childhood Obesity Survey

Laramie, WY – A study released by the federal government this week found that the percentage of obese children leveled off. But a state-wide survey on childhood obesity shows mixed results.

About 9.3 percent of Wyoming high school students are obese. That's far below the national average of 32 percent for all children.

But a state-wide survey of Wyoming high school students taken last year showed the percentage of obese high-schoolers went up by nearly one percentage point compared to 2005. The Wyoming Department of Health's Joe Grandpre says there's still a lot of work to be done.

But the percentage of kids who are on the verge of obesity and in danger of crossing into it, went down by nearly a percentage point. Grandpre says he's hopeful that trend will lead to fewer overweight kids in the future.
