Rawlins, Wy – Wyoming Game and Fish officials continue to see Elk deaths in the Red Rim area of southeast Wyoming. Game and Fish Spokeswoman Erin Smith says 48 Elk have died from apparently eating lichen. The herd suffered over 300 deaths in 2004 and she says it is the most significant death rate since that time. Smith says the problem is that the herd has returned to the area where lichen content is high. Smith says the game and fish is attempting to lure the Elk out of the area but so far they have had limited success. She says they have few options beyond that.
