Laramie, WY – Parents of children at Thayer Elementary School in Laramie are protesting plans to close the school. They lined up at a recent school board meeting to speak out. Fourteen speakers told the Albany County Board of Education that closing the school would result in crowded classrooms and possibly less money for the district's five other grade schools. School district officials stood their ground, however. They said the closure is needed because declining enrollment threatens to plunge the district into financial problems. Board chairman Jesse Vialpondo asked district staff to submit a preliminary report next month on steps to be taken if Thayer is closed.
