Laramie, WY – Wyoming Veterans' Commission director Don Ewing says a property tax break for veterans is overdue for an update--90 years overdue. Ewing's agency has authored that update in the form of a bill that will most likely come up for a vote this coming legislative session. Currently wyoming's veterans can knock off 2 thousand dollars from the assessed value of their home and then take a further, relatively small, percentage off the actual tax owed until they hit their cap. But Ewing says inflation and rising property taxes mean the vets' tax break hasn't kept pace. The bill would raise the amount vets could exempt from the assessed value of their home or extend the period of time they could knock off a percentage of the property tax they owe.
