Laramie, WY – The City of Laramie is warning residents to be cautious if they encounter bats after a dead bat found in the city recently tested positive for rabies.
The bat was found in the area of Washington Park, says Paul Harrison, director of parks and recreation for the city.
Doctor Richard Luce is field officer with the Wyoming Department of Health. He says bats are a major reservoir of rabies in the state and can lead to infections of humans and other animals.
Bats may spread rabies to humans through bites, scratches and contact with a mucous membrane. Luce says preventative treatment should be considered if a person has any physical contact with a bat, even if bite marks aren't seen.
