Rawlins, Wy – The city of Rawlins is laying off 12 employees. The city manager says it is all part of an effort to reduce Rawlins' deficit. Steve Golnar (goal nar) says the deficit is mostly due to a big drop in sales tax revenue. The layoffs are only the latest in cost cutting measures. Already the city has reduced spending on supplies, services, new vehicle purchases and construction projects. Golnar says they will continue to look for ways to reduce spending.
"What we want to do is right size our operation so we can emerge from this situation able to address the challenges of the future."
Golnar says Rawlins eliminated another five positions by not filling them after some quit or retired. That means this month alone Rawlins has cut its staff by over ten percent.
