Laramie, WY – Governor Dave Freudenthal says rural subdivisions must shoulder some of the blame for declining sage grouse habitats. In a press conference the governor discussed the recommendations of a state panel charged with making proactive suggestions to prevent the bird from being listed as endangered. Among the recommendations was giving counties more authority to regulate subdivisions under 640 acres in sage grouse habitat. Freudenthal says something must be done about rural development.
The committee requested 27 million dollars for mapping habitat and conservation efforts. The governor says he believes he will find some support in the legislature, but he acknowledged it's too early to tell how the lawmakers will respond.
