Pierre, SD – The South Dakota Railroad Board has voted
unanimously to urge approval of a two-point-three (B) billion dollar federal loan for the Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern
Railroad's expansion plan.
D-M-and-E wants to haul coal from Wyoming's Powder River Basin to power plants in the Midwest. The Federal Railroad Administration is taking public comment on the proposed loan until next Tuesday -- and the agency will make a decision later on the loan.
South Dakota's congressional delegation and Governor Mike Rounds
supported the project at a public meeting yesterday in Huron. Members of the state Railroad Board say they also support the
project because it will improve rail service, boost the economy and provide jobs.
Opponents of the project spoke at the Railroad Board meeting. They say the faster trains will cause safety problems because many homes and businesses are located close to the tracks in Pierre and
