Senate committee continues wind tax discussion
By Bob Beck
Laramie, Wyo. – A select legislative committee continues debate whether to tax wind farm operations, and how much. Senate Revenue Committee chairman John Schiffer says as they consider a tax, they want to make sure that Wyoming's tax structure does not make it less competitive with other states that are also in the wind business. That's why the committee is leaning towards a flat-tax plan, under which a company would pay a regular rate to operate in the state. Schiffer says that would be better than imposing a series of taxes on a company. "If you can level those costs out over the lifespan of a wind farm, it makes us much more competitive," he says.
The committee meets Tuesday in Mills. It will recommend a wind generation tax plan to the legislature's revenue committee at the end of the year.
