Shigellosis Cases Increase

Laramie, WY – Fremont County has seen the number of cases of shigellosis climb to 78. The bacterial disease causes diarrhea, fever, stomach cramping and other problems and it's spread through fecal material. The state epidemiologist, Doctor Tracy Murphy, says shigellosis is more easily spread than most people think. "The amount of the organism it takes to make someone sick is very, very small, so it doesn't take obvious fecal contamination to spread it," Dr. Murphy said. Because of that, Dr. Murphy says people who have diarrhea should stay home from work or school and wash their hands thoroughly.
