Cheyenne, WY – A ranking Wyoming Democrat says that although the party has slim representation in the current State Legislature, Democrats made an impact in the recent session. House Minority Whip Mary Throne admits that Democrats faced some challenges this year. Only four of the 30 Senators were Democrats, and only ten Representatives were members of the minority party. But Throne says Democrats saw several bills pass and amended a number of measures in important ways. So although Democrats' numbers were limited, Throne says their impact was not.
"Certainly I'd prefer to have a few more of us. It made it difficult to form coalitions. But at the start of the session I stressed that none of us wanted to be irrelevant. And we weren't."
Throne credits the House and Senate leadership for being very inclusive. But she adds that few Wyoming issues fall along party lines.
