Cheyenne, WY – The school district in Pine Bluffs is discontinuing its merit pay program for elementary school teachers.

The district began the program three years ago. Under it,
teacher bonuses are tied to how well students improve on the
statewide assessment test.
Superintendent Margie Simineo says teacher bonuses can run
between $500 and $2,000. She says since the program began,
proficiency has increased in reading and math, but not writing.
Simineo argued to keep the program but trustees said they're
concerned about costs when the district is facing budget cuts.
