Train derails south of Thermopolis

Laramie, WY – A locomotive has fallen into the Wind River after hitting a boulder south of Thermopolis. The crew survived but diesel is leaking into the river.
Burlington Northern-Santa Fe spokesman Gus Melonas says the freight train hit a boulder about the size of a pickup truck just after noon Wednesday. The accident took place about 5 miles south of Thermopolis.
Melonas says the company is moving equipment to the site to remove the partially submerged locomotive. He says the two crew members were taken to a local
hospital.
Hot Springs County Emergency Management Coordinator Bill Gordon says the town of Thermopolis has shut down its municipal water system intakes from the river because of the diesel spill.
