Laramie, Wy – Cheyenne was set to be home to the nation's first commercial wind turbine testing facility, but the plan never got off the ground. The company Underwriters Laboratories received a grant to run the project, but returned the money after several problems arose. Including getting enough money, a lack of equipment and information and the company decided to go in a different direction. The Wyoming Business Council helped try to make this work and State Energy Program Manager, Dale Hoffman, says its failure should not impede the development of more wind farms, but a lack of electrical transmission capacity could.
Hoffman says the site where the wind turbine testing would have happened is still empty, but no one is expressing interest in taking over the project at this point in time.
