Laramie, Wy – The National Education Association and a few school districts around the country have filed suit against the Secretary of Education. The groups are saying that the federal government is violating the No Child Left Behind Act by not paying for everything it mandates.
Director of public affairs at the Wyoming Department of Education, Deb Hinckely, says any gap between mandates and funding is minimal and they disagree with the suit, in part because the federal government has increased payments to the state by severeal million dollars and this has met the needs of the state.
An example Hinckley uses is an increase of five million dollars of federal funding for the poorer schools in the state.
She says while the state does not support the lawsuit there are parts of the No Child Left Behind law that officials believe need to be improved.
